MULTI CAPE
Multi Cape was part of a Second year fashion design studio collaboration with Te Papa. The project brief was to select a garment from Te Papa's costume archives from the period between 1800-1945 to base our project on. We were to analyse and conduct research on the individual garments and their time period and use this to develop our designs. I chose an opera cape from the 1920's that was initially a skirt in 1910 and got redesigned into a cape as it dated. I have designed an Avant Garde, ready to wear garment developed from my historical piece from Te Papa, through the concept of function.
My chosen historical garment was converted from a skirt to a cape, making it modular. This gave me the inspiration to use function as my key word, focusing on making the garment functional through creating multiple ways for it to be worn. There are three collars on the jacket/dress, the larger two are able to be taken on and off and swapped around. There are also two frills on the bottom of the garment, both of which can be taken on and off and also switched around. All frills and collars are attached by dome tape to each other and the garment itself. The key ideas of the cape are still shown through the silhouette, purpose of and colours used in the garment. However I have made it contemporary through the use of more modern patterns/fabrics and the function aspect.
